On Sunday, December 11, 2016, we read the following to our Church.
“I have informed the Elders that I’m stepping down as Senior Minister, effective February 5, 2017. This decision is personally painful for Megan and me yet at the same time; we are peaceful about this being the best thing for Discovery Church moving forward.
We have been asked by many people what we are planning to do next. We have prepared some Transition FAQ’s which you can access via the link below.
As the year closes out, I reflected on my leadership over the last fifteen months (eight years in total), and the leadership required of me in the next season. I have come to the conclusion that I have both done the best I can do, and also, I have done all I can do. Therefore it is in the best interest of Discovery that a door opens for someone who can do even more.
I have led us towards the vision of leading people in the passionate pursuit of Jesus, with a dedicated focus on outsiders and a passion for families. I believe I have implemented all that I can do to this point in time. Making this change empowers the Elders to affirm and set the direction moving forward.
Megan and I genuinely believe that this decision is in the best interests of God’s Kingdom, Discovery Church and our family. We have waves of emotions for sure but also a sense of the peace of God which truly passes all understanding.
Whenever an announcement of leadership change occurs, there are different emotions, some feel sad, some relieved, some may feel let down. It would be difficult for us to know which of those people you are, but if you feel we let down by making this decision we ask that you, please forgive us.
To our entire Church, both those that have been here the whole time, we have and those that have joined since that time, there are no adequate words to say thank you, and none will suffice. We are honoured beyond words to have laboured with you. To our Eldership; We are unified in heart and are 100% for you. We crave your prayers and your grace as we serve you in transition and all enter into a new season together.”
