Every story has an enemy. Every unfolding epic has a force to be reckoned with that the characters need to push back against, dig deep for resources they didn’t know they had and (ultimately) triumph.
At least that’s the way the story arc goes!
The introduction of Jesus to the world created major disruption then, and major disruption now. His appearance in Bethlehem destabilised the political powers that be. Namely King Herod. He is the enemy of Christmas in human form.
A despot of the highest order, Herod invested his dying energy into removing the threat that he believed this baby King of the Jews posed. He was deeply threatened by Jesus, obsessively focused on having him killed and deliriously fanatical about making sure people suffered under his rule.
Yet in all of the that the Christian Gospel both survived and thrived. WOW.
Enjoy knowing you have an opportunity to meet Jesus and that is much more significant that the obstacles to meeting him.
